Abortion

Abortion, a word which seems to be always appear in ones mind with negative sign or bad thoughts. It doesn't always occur followed by a premarital pregnancy alone. Just like a case which has been disturbing my mind very much. An excerpt from the case:

The law says, you cannot terminate a pregnancy after 20th week. So what do you do if you find out, after 20th week, that your child will be born with sever abnormalities?

The Indian Abortion Law do not permit a medical termination of pregnancy beyond 20th week (in US & UK till 24th week ). A doctor who conducting an abortion after the 20th week faces upto 7 years imprisonment if it is done for any reason apart from saving the mother’s life, the woman also faces a sentence.

Hmm, a week ago, an Indian young couple walked to the legal path to question about the medical termination of pregnancy after 20th week. The doctors who examined the 25th week old pregnancy on the young lady reported that the foetus is on complete heart blockage and there’s chance that the child will born incapacitated and handicapped to survive.

The court was not satisfied with the petitioned given by the couple and the gynecologist, saying that there’s no confirmed positive finding is given by the committee as to whether substantial risk (serious mental and physical deformity) is there to the child. So they asked another report probably from another gynecologist. The couple decides to take an additional opinion from a private gynecologist and doctors too agreed that there may be some complication to the foetus.

Even after an additional report given, the law however refused the young couple’s petition to abort the foetus. The judge felt that previous report is contradicting the report submitted by the private doctors. In added that, at presents the law bars abortion beyond 20th week is because, it usually easy to find the sex of the child, unless the mother’s health in risk (Indian law seem to be only concern about the mother than the child who going to be born). The young couple has no choice than giving birth to the child whom will be incapacitated and handicapped to survive.

Well, I don’t know how many out there agree on abortion issue…Every individual has their own point of view on this…Some feel killing a life (the foetus) is biggest Sin and some feels it’s better to be killed when you find the child might born with severe problems or abnormalities… If You ask me, I don't think that abortion should be used as a form of contraception (or for any other personal reasons) BUT if would result in a child born with a congenital disorder that would be fatal or associated with significant morbidity, (Anencephalic babies, babies born without brains, have no hope of living any length of time) then I would say, it’s not a wrong thing to be done. Today, many countries have legalized abortion. Mostly the medical termination of pregnancy is allowed till the 24th week. But there are some countries allows only up to 20th week like in India. In China, law permits 28weeks of gestation as the upper limit for legally performing abortion.

To which extend we can accept this Law of Abortion? How if you find out your child is with severe abnormalities after the 24th week. In my point of view, guess in such situation, the law should permit the medical termination of pregnancy even after the 24th week. While an unborn child cannot verbally express the pain he/she experiences, all biological indicators suggest unborn children are capable of feeling pain by at least 20 weeks. So, an unborn child after 20 weeks gestation is fully capable of experiencing pain... Without question, abortion is a dreadfully painful experience for any infant subjected to such a surgical procedure. But the extreme pain the child might go through is only that period of time, unlike those who are born with extreme deformity faces life long in many forms. It not only affects the child but also the parents mentally.

If such child born to a well to do family, then it’s not a problem for them to give medical attention and support the child throughout his/her life but if the child born to a poor couple? What are they going to do and how they going to support the kid medically when they themselves unable to support. For such situations, I guess its better if the abort the child rather than killing the child day by day after giving birth… However, the view on abortion may vary on each individual and we also should take account on other factors. We can’t kill a life just like that for own reasons.

Here goes some of the videos on abortion.. If those who unnecessarily abort (ex. Teenage pregnancy –that’s your own bloody mistake not the child?) could stop a min and think, guess the number of abortion cases wouldn’t increase year to year.

When an unborn is found to suffer from congenital deformities which may cripple him/her for the rest of his/her life, I think it is humane to abort it rather than knowingly let the child suffer later.

I'm not a mother and I don't know if I will be one in the future. So I can't speak for other mothers to be, but from medical point of view, it is not wrong to abort when the situation warrants it.

since when india is so lawful? yea, they will act according to law when its not necessary and when its crucial, they just ignore. killing a life or the word abortion is painful, but to live a disabled kid is even more painful.
